Earth is a gift

Better options, greener futures.

As part of our focus on new Environmental, Social and Governance issues (or ESG), we examine all of the ways that our business has an impact on the world around us.

On this page, we demonstrate how we are dedicated to a more sustainable future through branded payments.

Paper over plastic

Blackhawk Network products are all about impact. We want people to love the gift cards they receive and appreciate the rewards that motivate them. At the same time, we want to reduce our impact on the planet.

We’re on a mission to reduce the gift card industry’s reliance on harmful plastics like PVC. That’s why we’re actively converting most of our physical, plastic gift card products to sustainable alternatives—like responsibly sourced paper card stock.

This isn’t a new initiative for BHN. We’ve had paper-based products for more than eight years. This year, though, we’re embracing this alternative and setting ambitious targets: we are encouraging our industry partners to convert to paper gift cards by the end of 2024. We hope that our new goal will also help nudge other companies in the industry—and our customers—to embrace paper cards quickly.

Digital leads the way

Paper is much better than plastic, but the greenest type of gift card isn’t a physical gift card at all, it’s a digital eGift. Our best-in-class digital products don’t need manufacturing, printing, packaging, shipping or delivery: they arrive by email and leave no physical debris behind.

eGifts also ship almost instantly, which means that customers and companies love them.

We’re working to expand our digital offerings. We’re also always inventing new ways to bring the eGift option into physical settings. One example is ScanIt™, a QR-code based solution that gives shoppers the ability to choose and pay for eGifts in person at a physical point of sale.
