As exam season draws to a close, another generation of students are finishing one chapter in their story and turning to the next. Life at your University.
It’s often a time of intense excitement and anticipation, balanced with anxieties around moving away from home, friends and family for the first time. Choosing the right place to call home-away-from-home is a huge part of this anxiety, and finding the right accommodation is vitally important to University life. Is it close to lectures? Does it offer me the privacy to study in peace? Will I meet people like me? And, crucially, will I be able to afford it?
According to a December 2018 Mintel report, students living in halls of residence spend more than their off-campus peers on rent - a whopping £493 per month on average. The sophistication of student lodgings has increased dramatically, with many now offering en-suites, high speed broadband and access to state of the art sports facilities; but this means that even the cheapest room on offer can easily outstrip the basic maintenance loan of £4,053 a year.
As a result many students have little choice but to look at less desirable off-campus or private lodging facilities. So, how do you incentivise students to pick student halls and benefit from the community and pastoral support that comes with campus living?
